Download OSX Lion Again After It Has Been Installed

This is just a quick note on how to redownload OSX Lion.  I had a hard time finding this, maybe it’s common knowledge for everyone else, but…

There are tons of articles out there on how to create a bootable disk, or USB stick, etc., but all of them require you to have the original installer downloaded from the Mac App Store, which dissappears after you install it.  Don’t even bother looking, I at least haven’t been able to find it.

Open up the Mac App Store, Option-Click on the ‘Purchased’ tab and the button should allow you to click on ‘Install’ again.  After it downloads, cancel the installation and it should still appear in the ‘Applications’ folder.

  1. Thank you! Why would they do that?!?! Going to attempt a clean install after system seems a little sluggish even after a week of use.

  2. Thanks for sharing, I quickly found your post from a Google search and it was just what I was looking for.

  3. Just got here after a google search as I was wondering the same thing. Not really obvious, is it?

P.S. Curiously enough, I also work for EMC. 🙂

  4. (Coming from a PC background)

When documentation typically states ‘Option’, I’m looking onscreen for the some kind of choice on the screen and not what’s on my keyboard… ><

Took me a moment to re-read the simple instructions…. GOT IT. Thanks for the tip!

    1. It appears that this option has been removed. I’m looking for alternatives. Please post a comment here if you’re having an issue and use a valid email address so that I can respond.

      Thanks.

  5. Probably the easiest way of re-downloading the lion app is:

    -Open the App Store
    -Navigate to the Lion App
-Make sure you are logged in with the account where you got the Lion App
-Press the “ALT” key and klick on the “Installed” icon.

    There you go.
